On the back of his neck, there's a healed over scar where, not too long ago, he had a chip inserted when he was erroneously imprisoned in Binghamton. The chip was used to control all "dangerous" Alphas, making them virtually zombies, with only enough self awareness to walk or sit down.
The chip has since been deactivated and removed completely. Insofar as Gary knows, anyway.
